25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act

DDA northwell.JPG

“An Act to make it unlawful to discriminate against disabled persons in connection with employment, the provision of goods, facilities and services or the disposal or management of premises; to make provision about the employment of disabled persons; and to establish a National Disability Council.”

Ten years ago, the DDA and other pieces of discrimination legislation were rolled into the Equality Act 2010.  The definition of "disability" changed very slightly but is still essentially the same as it was in 1995:  "A person (P) has a disability if P has a physical or mental impairment, and the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities".

We should recognise that we have made progress in the last 25 years to ensure that disabled people have equality - but we can all do better.
